“Hey, recreational vehicle, you should try some recreation!” –Lisa Ralph.
------------
It is Sunday. And that means rest.
We are staying in two homes in Socorro, New Mexico.
What must it be like to live in each of the places through which our team passes?
------------
There are the strong days.
There are the days when all fails you—all physical and emotional abilities.
The days of massages
And the days of only acute pain.
There is the wind and the beating sun, the days of grasshoppers and the days of bumpy road after horrible bumpy road.
The days of smooth rides.
The days of hills that never end. There is always one more. One steeper. An uphill followed by a downhill. Climbing and falling.
There are sunsets and sunrises. Selfish exclamations and self-less acts.
There are the days of deep green forest, pelting rain, or days of plains, of desert and cacti and 110 degree weather.
There are all the little moments, the jokes both witty and pointless.
There are days when a butterfly goes faster than you up a hill…and because of that little thing you want to throw up your hands in frustration and get in the van.
There is the way each body feels at the end of 8, 9, 10 hours of biking.
The people you meet: Billy Bo- “Everyone in this here desert knows me”, and…nameless others. Like the woman who came up and touched me on the arm, speaking words of encouragement that she did not have to share.
Each personality on the team and they way they grow and change from day to day. I wonder what goes through their minds and how they are each experiencing this. Each of our days are unique.
I’m learning how to enjoy each day, to enjoy the journey in my own way….and to enjoy biking. ;-)
