About Me:
I am a blue-eyed boy of exceptional paleness hailing from the lower right-hand corner of Alabama; now live from the great state of Tennessee. I was born in a John Mellencamp song where I wandered into drug store/soda shops and beauty parlors after school. Presently, I'm getting used to life in the slow-moving Jackson though I still miss the radio and record stores of Nashville.

At home, my lovely wife and I like to play Scrabble and work through our Netflix queue. We sometimes go to thrift stores and yard sales. I make mix CDs. She makes meaningful meals and enters recipe contests. We have entirely too many books. We like to talk to each other more than is probably healthy. Donna and I live with and are caretakers of her mom who has stage four cancer. We all laugh a lot together.

My post-college years have been accompanied by personal crises (unemployment, family illness, and depression). I have a B.A. in Christian Education and an M.A. in Religion but these experiences have taught me as much. While I have had my own hardships, I've never been without running water. There are people in the world who do not have clean water at all. Compassion moves me to bike 3,100 miles from San Diego to Myrtle Beach to raise funds to build wells for them. Please be moved also and give as you are able to support me in this.

Clean Water and the Stephen Colbert Think Tank

I had a crazy dream the other night.

Stephen Colbert was there.

As were a committee of 40 some-odd people including my wife.

Our task was to figure out how to solve the world's problems.

The truth is, even in my dream we couldn't fix everything.

We had a budget.

We had to do the most good with a billion dollars.

Truthfully, considering the enormity of the problems we face that…

Waking Up From A Dream

It's strange to be on this end of a dream, the waking up end.

I'm on the closing end of a Ride:Well year and it's exactly like waking up from a dream. I'm rubbing my eyes and scratching my head while trying to put together the parts I can remember. It's all very unlike any experience I've had before and as a result I'm not entirely sure it really happened.

What possessed me one year ago last month to complete the application to participate in Ride:Well? I can't…

There's Gotta Be More to That Story.

We pulled enough metal folding chairs into a circle and took our seats for the final team meeting of Ride:Well South 2010. This was our debriefing, at least it was supposed to be. Instead, as one after another suggested working through the events of the past two months would take at least as long. When I heard this suggestion, I couldn't help but wonder what there was to process. I didn't say anything. I couldn't put my thoughts into words. But, I knew what those thoughts were. I…

Columbus and the Santa Maria

The General spoke softly but sternly, "It's time." I knew just what he meant. Still, I was hesitant. "I'm not ready." He stopped me, "It's time. People are counting on you." I informed him, "These things take time." He said, "Before we leave Red Oak you need to blog."

And so here I am, commissioned by the General to articulate a few thoughts into a blogpost, to share with you of my adventures.

About 500 years ago, another pale explorer set forth on his own…
