Mission and Purpose

Blood:Water Mission is a grassroots organization that empowers communities to work together against the HIV/AIDS and water crisis. It's core purpose is to build community through creative social action.

Tell Me More...

Blood:Water Mission is a registered 501(c)3 non-profit organization founded by the members of the multi-platinum, Grammy Award-winning band, Jars of Clay, to address the HIV/AIDS crisis in Africa. Visit Blood:Water Mission online.

Blood:Water Mission exists to promote clean blood and clean water efforts in Africa, tangibly reducing the impact of the HIV/AIDS pandemic while addressing the underlying issues of poverty, injustice and oppression. Blood:Water Mission is building clean water wells, supporting medical facilities, and focusing on community and worldview transformation, both here in America and in Africa.

We recognize that numbers and statistics are hard to grasp, and that sometimes a step back is necessary to conceptualize the enormity of the HIV/AIDS crisis. Yet we also know that simply standing from a distance with arms thrown in the air is not a solution. We believe in pressing inward, in building relationships and bridges with communities in Africa. We believe in hearing personal stories and walking alongside brothers and sisters who have demonstrated strength and faith in the midst of desperate and tragic situations.

We hold fast to the conviction that we are all responsible for being good stewards of our time, our resources and our compassion in a broken world. Learn more about Blood:Water Mission online.

What People are Saying

"The crisis in Africa is difficult to translate to those of us living in the states. Our hearts do not know where to begin. Of the greatest accomplishments of Blood:Water Mission has been their ability to sort through the chaos to match provision with need. Clean water prevents many diseases that can prove fatal to a person suffering from AIDS. Clean water, then, guards clean blood. The simple gift of a dollar provides invaluable clean water for one African for One year. Our calling, then, is to give from our undeserved provision into their undeserved need. In doing so, we participate in the search and rescue mission God is orchestrating in this fallen world." Donald Miller, New York Times Best-Selling Author

"It is indeed great that Blood:Water Mission has once again done it for the poor faces they have not seen. These are all fruits of your meekness and love to us. Thank you again. You are deeply rooted in my heart and I lack words to express our gratitude. I'll be visiting the two groups over the weekend to pass the message to them about their new wells." Benjamin O'yoo (Gwako, Kisumu, Kenya)

“I had planned on using the money to install a sprinkler system… but what is dead grass compared to helping people obtain clean water.” Steph G. USA

"Being an HIV/AIDS positive widow, I sought help from a health facility and they gave me drugs to boost my immunity. I gained strength and joined a women group called Kagago… While in the group they had applied for a borehole drilling… The borehole had changed my life and I am no longer the same. I have been trained on Health, Hygiene and Sanitation issues, …(and) started my own kitchen garden… (to) get money and for my domestic use. There is plenty of water for washing and, (I) boil some for drinking. I have enough time to take care of my sick child because I get water a distance of less than 100m not like before when I had to walk for not less than 5 km in search of water… I am able to educate my children who are in lower primary because I have income generating activities that enables me to buy school uniforms, books and also pay for exams fee… I am able to prevent other diseases by simply hand washing with soap. So the money that would have been used for buying drugs is now used for buying food and other things… A part from missing my late husband whose life was shortened due to opportunistic diseases caused by lack of clean safe water; I now live a happy life with my four children." Mary Adhiambo, Kenya.
